Functional Fitness Flooring at Rhode Island Fitness CenterPosted: Mar 2011 Posted by: Mats Inc.

In 2010, the in-house design team at a popular Rhode Island fitness center developed plans for and revealed their new state-of-the-art facility to better meet the needs of fitness enthusiasts of all levels, from beginners to seasoned athletes. To realize the progressive fitness environment, the designers needed cutting edge equipment, top of the line machines and superior fitness flooring solutions that would ensure a comfortable, safe and healthy environment for members. The 17,000 square foot facility called for highly specialized products appropriate for each functional area. The designers were clear that they did not want to sacrifice aesthetics for function and they turned to Mats Inc. for the variety of flooring products that they required.

The main entrance and reception area needed to have an extremely durable product that would stand up to heavy foot traffic and harsh New England winters and also make a great first impression on members as they walk in. Designers chose Supreme Nop, for its durability and outstanding scrubbing action to remove moisture, dirt, and debris from underfoot. Mats Inc. delivered Supreme Nop Tweed Brown—a color that coordinated well with the rest of the flooring and décor.

Calypso Tile and Floorworks Planks Fit World Rhode Island

For corridors and common walking areas, the design team considered the warm and timeless look of natural wood, but was concerned about its ability to resist scuffs, scratches and gouges. They discovered the best of both worlds in Floorworks™ Planks; the authentic look of hardwood flooring in a resilient plank that is long-lasting and extremely easy to maintain. Mats Inc. delivered 2,200 square feet of Floorworks™ in Natural Walnut.

Comfort was the focus for the facility’s stretching areas where designers chose Calypso carpet tiles in Chestnut for the complementary color options, supple texture and dimensional stability; they won’t shrink or curl. With an affinity for the look of natural wood and the hygienic requirements for a group fitness room, designers decided on Woodflex™  Maple from Mats Inc. for its realistic wood look and antibacterial properties. A slip resistant and hygienic surface was the priority in the locker rooms and to maintain a contemporary design, designers selected Bolon® woven vinyl in BKB Sisal Plain Beige.

“I am extremely pleased with the flooring from Mats Inc. that we have installed in our facility,” said the club manager. “It’s an elegant feel at a reasonable price, which is just what I was looking for in order to bring together the atmosphere we created at our club.”
