Regional Reuse Centers around the country help to reduce waste by offering homeowners and builders a demolition alternative to the landfill.

Typically nonprofit organizations, the stores receive donations of new or gently used building materials in exchange for a tax deductable receipt.  Then they resell the materials for home maintenance and improvements.

Some centers also offer demolition services, expert advice, technical assistance, or hands-on workshops that teach home improvement skills.

Stores such as Boston Building Resources, offer customers additional ways to  improve the environment by promoting energy-efficient, water-saving, and environmentally friendly items such as rain barrels, home compost bins, weather stripping, and materials made from recycled components.

To find a reuse store near you, go to the Building Materials Reuse organization website, www.bmra.org, and enter your zip code.
